Issued around 1982, two years before the event, this color halftone poster promotes the 23rd Olympiad in Los Angeles. Los Angeles became the host after other cities withdrew from the bidding, and the 1984 Games were run largely on private funding rather than public money, which set them apart from many earlier Olympics. The Soviet Union and several allied nations boycotted the Games in response to the 1980 U.S.-led boycott of Moscow, so the poster appeared while the event was still expected to draw a full international field.
