Cherubs and swine share the frame in this color lithograph, a pairing of angels and hogs that was unusual even for the sentimental advertising of the 1890s. N.K. Fairbank & Co. refined lard in Chicago and St. Louis, and the piece was issued as a presentation print, the kind of picture businesses gave customers to keep their name in homes. Chicago's packing houses made the city a center of the American pork trade in these years, so a lard maker advertising with hogs tied its product to a local industry. The print also carries a U.S. copyright notice, showing the firm treated the design as protected property.
