Here a crevasse, or levee break, on Bayou des Glaises at Moreauville in Avoyelles Parish is the subject, dated May 16, 1927, during the high water of the Mississippi and its tributaries. When the bayou's embankment gave way, floodwater spread across nearby farmland and toward the village, a pattern repeated along many miles of levee that spring. Ewing, Inc., of Baton Rouge made the print, which belongs to a disbound album of photographs documenting the 1927 flood. Images like this show how quickly a single levee failure could turn fields and roads into open water.
