A Confederate monument stands beside the courthouse in Martinsville, Virginia, a small city in the Piedmont near the North Carolina line. Monuments like this one went up across the South mostly between the 1890s and the 1920s, when the Lost Cause version of the Civil War was being set in stone, and many were placed at county seats where they faced the courthouse square. The caption card gives no date, so the year of the photograph is unknown, but it belongs to a series of courthouse views catalogued under the Dunlop Society name.
