The Vance Monument, a tall memorial to Zebulon Vance, the Civil War-era North Carolina governor and later U.S. senator, anchors this view of Court Square in Asheville. The photogravure, dated around 1899, shows the monument alongside the county courthouse, City Hall, the Palmetto Building, and a library, which together made the square the town's civic center at the turn of the century. The print was made by the Albertype Company and copyrighted by H. Taylor Rogers, a photographer who documented the town. The record's caption details are old and unverified, so the exact date and building names should be checked against other sources.
