The title points to a photographer's studio draped in black for mourning, a moment when the working space itself became the subject. The occasion was the death of Ulysses S. Grant on July 23, 1885, at Mount McGregor, New York, where he died of throat cancer while finishing his *Personal Memoirs*. Across the country, shops and studios commonly marked his passing with black crepe and portraits of the former president. Images like this show how ordinary places joined a national period of grief.
