Ulysses S. Grant is the subject here, the Union general who led federal armies to victory in the Civil War before serving as the 18th president from 1869 to 1877. Grant rose from a modest start in Ohio and a failed career in civilian life to become the commanding general of all Union forces in 1864, a rise that gave his public image unusual weight when he entered the White House. Portraits of him from this period were widely reproduced, so it is worth looking closely at the pose and dress for signs of the military reputation that followed him into office.
