Harry Houdini, the escape artist and illusionist, is the figure at the center of this card, which was produced to describe a poster of him. Houdini (born Erik Weisz in Budapest in 1874) rose to fame in the early 1900s with handcuff and water-tank escapes, and his name became synonymous with stage magic and daring publicity. Posters like the one this card describes were a central part of how touring performers drew crowds to theaters across the United States and Europe. The card itself is a small piece of ephemera from a shop that sold maps and photographs, so its notes are best read as a record of how his image was collected and shared.
