The Orpheum theater handbill is a reminder of how central vaudeville was to the careers of stage magicians in the early 20th century. Houdini built his reputation on touring the Orpheum circuit, a chain of big-city variety houses where a headliner could reach audiences night after night. Handbills like this one were printed in bulk and pasted on walls and shop windows, so they served as both advertising and a record of which acts shared a bill. Looking closely, the lettering and layout show the bold, crowded style that promoters favored to compete for attention on busy streets.
