This glass negative is labeled "Ernest R. Ackerman, N.J.," a title the National Photo Company supplied and that has not been independently verified. It dates from about 1918 to 1921, when the company, based in Washington, D.C., made large numbers of portraits and views on glass plates like this one. Herbert A. French gave the plate to the Library of Congress in 1947. Streaks and blemishes on its surface come from natural deterioration of the original coating, so they reflect the plate's age rather than how it was handled.
