A carrier stands at the curb emptying a street letter box, with an automobile lettered "United Mail" parked nearby. The picture dates from between 1909 and 1932, a period when motor vehicles were gradually taking over work that horse-drawn wagons had long done. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio active in Washington, D.C., made this print, and its scenes of city streets and daily work offer a useful record of how mail collection looked as the automobile came into use. The vehicle's lettering is a good detail to study.
