The name on this glass negative, Eliz. Gardiner, comes from a caption card and has not been independently verified, so the sitter's identity should be treated as provisional. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of the Bain News Service, a New York agency founded by George Grantham Bain that supplied newspapers with news and feature photographs in the early twentieth century. Its glass plates were often made quickly for publication, so many pictures from the collection were meant for the press rather than kept as studio work. Negatives of this small size offer a useful record of how working photographers recorded people and events before flexible film replaced glass plates.
