Few places in the Levant pair a living village so closely with monumental ruins as Baalbek, and this view sets the modern settlement beside its ancient remains, with a structure the record names as Dar El-Kadib in the background. The Roman-era temple complex, built on an older sanctuary and known in antiquity as Heliopolis, dominates the town and drew travelers and archaeologists through the early twentieth century. The picture belongs to the G. Eric and Edith Matson Photograph Collection, whose images document the region roughly between 1910 and 1940, though the date given here is approximate.
