Unlike many wartime posters, this one relies entirely on lettering, with its question-form title asking viewers to beware poison gas. Printed in 1917, it reflects a period when chemical weapons had become a constant danger on the Western Front. Chlorine was first released at Ypres in 1915, and Germany introduced mustard gas there in 1917. The poster's designers, Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh and Herbert MacNair, were members of the Glasgow Four, a Scottish circle known for its Art Nouveau and Glasgow Style work.
