Burnside Bridge, a stone arch crossing over Antietam Creek near Sharpsburg, Maryland, takes its name from Union general Ambrose Burnside, whose troops fought to take it on September 17, 1862. Georgia riflemen defending the crossing held the high ground above the creek for hours, and the bridge did not fall until the afternoon, a delay many historians see as costly to the Union effort. The mill buildings and millrace nearby recall that this valley was working farmland before the battle made it one of the most studied sites of the Civil War. Views of the bridge often look peaceful, which makes its wartime role harder to imagine.
