Erasmus Darwin Cooper and his sister Emily Gibson Cooper sit side by side in this sixth plate daguerreotype, posed three-quarter length. A note written inside the case by Addie Hatch, dated February 28, 1863, from Moravia, identifies them as brother and sister. Erasmus was born in 1827 and Emily in 1829, so the portrait was made when they were young, probably between 1840 and 1860, the years when daguerreotypes were the most common form of studio portrait. The photographer is unidentified, but the case and its note survive as part of the Cooper Curtice Papers at the Library of Congress.
