Scratched into the face of this plate is the inscription "Card. Wiseman," which identifies the sitter as Nicholas Patrick Wiseman, the Catholic prelate made a cardinal in 1850. He sits in an armchair, turned three-quarters to the left, wearing a clerical robe. The daguerreotype was produced in Mathew Brady's studio between 1844 and 1860, when the process was the leading form of portrait photography. Wiseman's elevation to cardinal helped spark the "Papal Aggression" controversy in England, so the portrait records a figure at the center of a heated religious and political debate.
