A color lithograph carrying the plain command "Buy Liberty Bonds" dates from about 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War. Congress authorized the bonds that spring to help finance the war, and the Treasury Department ran a series of Liberty Loan drives that relied heavily on posters like this one to reach ordinary households. Such posters were printed in large runs and displayed in post offices, shop windows and workplaces, where their bold lettering and patriotic appeal aimed to turn a request for a loan into a civic duty.
