This 1941 Jefferson nickel shows a well-circulated obverse, with the profile of Thomas Jefferson worn smooth and the words LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST still legible along the edge. The coin's design dates to 1938, when Felix Schlag's portrait replaced the Buffalo nickel, and it was struck as an everyday coin of the late Depression years. Its wear reflects the decades of pocket use that most circulating coins experienced. A year later, the United States began changing the nickel's composition for the war effort, so coins from 1941 belong to the last years of the original alloy.
