The only identifying detail for this glass negative is the name "J.L. Ford," which the Library of Congress took from caption cards and lists as unverified, so it may not reliably identify the subject. The negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Bain's glass negatives, often 5 by 7 inches or smaller, record a wide mix of people, streets, events and portraits from that period. Without a date or confirmed sitter, the image is best understood as an example of the agency's working files.
