Yokohama's arch is the subject here, though the record gives no date and no detail about its design, so its exact form and purpose are unknown. The city grew quickly after it opened to foreign trade in 1859, becoming one of Japan's main ports and a place where Western merchants, diplomats and photographers were a familiar presence. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Its title comes from information the service recorded on the negatives or caption cards and has not been independently verified.
