The Second Liberty Loan of 1917 was one of several bond drives the United States government used to pay for its entry into the First World War, which had been declared in April of that year. Posters like this one asked ordinary Americans to lend money to the government by buying bonds, and the campaign drew heavily on patriotic appeals, with many such images paired with slogans about duty to the troops and to the nation. Liberty Loan posters are often studied today for their imagery and their mix of art and advertising, and they show how the war effort reached into everyday life, from factory towns to small farms.
