A dog is the subject that sets this poster apart from the many security campaigns of the Second World War, which mostly relied on warnings and slogans. Yegley's 1943 design, printed by the U.S. Government Printing Office in 1944, uses the dash-led line "--because somebody talked!" to link everyday conversation with battlefield losses. Security posters of this kind warned that casual remarks about troop movements or shipping could reach enemy agents and cost American lives. Pairing a faithful animal with a casualty theme asks viewers to consider the human cost of a single careless word.
