Few performers of the 1920s drew bigger crowds than Lillian Leitzel, the German-born aerialist whose rope and ring acts made her a headline attraction on American circuses. This glass negative, dated May 15, 1925, pairs her with Bill Stieneke, though the record does not explain his role. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that produced news and publicity pictures in the early twentieth century, made the image, and the plate still shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration in its original coating.
