Few buildings in this part of the North End are built of wood, which makes this clapboard house stand out against the brick structures around its courtyard. The house dates to about 1680, making it one of the oldest surviving buildings in downtown Boston. Silversmith and patriot Paul Revere bought it in 1770 and lived there with his growing family, and it is best known as his home during the years leading up to the American Revolution. Its modest frame and the small enclosed yard show how crowded and mixed the neighborhood was.
