Few features in Yellowstone show the power of its hot water as plainly as Excelsior Geyser, whose overflow here pours in a broad, steaming stream toward the Firehole River. Excelsior was among the park's most powerful geysers in the late 1800s, and even after its eruptions weakened, its runoff carried large volumes of heated water into the river. The parked automobiles and sightseers at the edge mark the years around 1917, when motor touring was rapidly replacing the stagecoach as the way most visitors saw the park.
