Rather than showing a scene, this color lithograph is nearly all text, a plea that asks readers to picture the battlefield and then turns attention from the soldiers to the horses that carried them into it. Its central argument is that horses could not choose to fight or feel patriotic duty, so their fate rested entirely on human decisions. Issued in London in 1915, it appealed for donations to the Blue Cross Fund, a charity that raised money to care for sick and wounded horses serving with the British army. The poster's direct wording reflects the many fundraising and recruitment notices that circulated in Britain during the war.

NotesPoster is text only. Text continues: When we think of the horrors of war - when there rises before the mind the awful panorama of the battlefield - the men are not the only pathetic figures. An equal demand has been made on those noble animals who, when guided by a rider's hand, will face the cannon's mouth! They have to fight and suffer together, but there is this difference - the horses are not free agents - they have no exhortations of patriotic duty, no visions of glory and promotion.
