Few posters of the First World War asked for money on behalf of horses, but this 1915 color lithograph does exactly that, appealing for donations to a Blue Cross fund for wounded horses at the front. Its text names the Our Dumb Friends League, a London society for kindness to animals, and directs gifts to its secretary, Arthur J. Coke, at an address on Victoria Street. Britain's armies depended on horses to haul supplies, guns, and ambulances across the Western Front, and the animals suffered terribly in the mud and shellfire. The poster shows how animal charities took up the war effort alongside human relief work.
