A ring of fairies circles a mortal couple deep in the woods, the human pair caught at the edge of a world most viewers were taught to fear. In European folklore, fairy dancing was a dangerous invitation: those who joined a fairy ring might lose hours, years, or their wits, and the forest was where such encounters were thought most likely. Painters of the nineteenth century, when fairy subjects were especially popular in Britain, often used these scenes to mix wonder with unease. The board places it beside angels, a reminder that the line between heavenly and otherworldly beings was never very firm in popular imagination.
