Fairies gathering blossoms beneath a shadowed canopy give this scene its contrast of delicacy and gloom. Illustrators in the Victorian and Edwardian years drew on a long folklore tradition, often placing fairies in woodland where dark trees made the flowers seem to glow. Richard Doyle and, later, Cicely Mary Barker helped make the pairing of fairies and flowers a recognizable style, tying the creatures to innocence and the natural world. The board groups it with angels, a reminder of how often the two traditions met in popular art.
