A sleeping young woman lies in the woods while a company of fairies keeps watch over her, so the dreamer rather than any story's action sits at the center of the scene. Pictures like this drew on a long European habit of seeing the forest as a threshold between the everyday world and the unseen one, and they grew especially popular in the nineteenth century, when painters and illustrators looked to Shakespeare and older folklore for subjects. Notice how the light, the tangled undergrowth and the small attentive figures work together to create a hush between sleeping and waking.
