Winged fairies drifting through a forest crowded with animals and blossoms were a favorite subject for illustrators working in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when fairy painting enjoyed wide popularity in Britain and America. Here the figure is set among deer, birds, and flowers, so the scene reads as a meeting of the human and the natural world rather than a simple portrait. Artists of this kind often borrowed the look of angels, with their gauzy wings and calm faces, and gave the same look to woodland spirits, which blurred the line between religious and folkloric imagery. Notice how the creatures and plants are painted with as much care as the figure, a sign of the period's close attention to nature study.
