A long table laid beneath the trees, with small winged figures gathered around it, places this scene in the fairy-feast tradition. European folklore told of fairy banquets held in woodland clearings, where a mortal who tasted the food could be bound to the otherworld. Nineteenth-century artists, especially in Britain, returned to these revels with delicate detail and playful mischief, drawing on the fairy world popularized by Shakespeare's *A Midsummer Night's Dream*.
