The approach wall at Miraflores Locks, on the Panama Canal, is the subject here, photographed in 1913 while the waterway was still under construction. The lock was one of three flights built to lift ships roughly 54 feet between the Pacific end of the canal and Gatun Lake, and the concrete walls had to hold back enormous volumes of water. The board places this picture under Theodore Roosevelt because he championed the canal project during his presidency, which ended in 1909, and the work continued under his successors until the canal opened in 1914.
