Set among the concrete walls of the Gatun Locks, which raised ships about 85 feet to the level of Gatun Lake, this 1913 view shows the canal as its major structures were taking shape. Theodore Roosevelt drove the project after the United States took over construction from France in 1904, and in 1906 he became the first sitting president to travel outside the country when he visited the isthmus. The canal opened to shipping in August 1914. Note the scale of the walls and the engineering they required.
