The title, *Le tricolore*, points to the blue, white and red of the French flag, so this picture ties ballooning to national identity as much as to any single flight. France's ballooning tradition began in 1783, when the Montgolfier brothers launched a hot-air balloon at Annonay and Paris saw its first crewed ascents later that year. Balloons became popular public spectacles, and during the Siege of Paris in 1870 and 1871 they carried mail out of the encircled city. Images that pair balloons with the tricolour often present flight as a point of national pride.
