Few roadside markers from the early nineteenth century survive as clearly as this granite milestone, which still stands with its distance to Boston cut into the stone and the Framingham bridge noted beside it. Milestones like this one were set along the turnpikes that radiated out from Boston, and they guided stagecoach drivers, teamsters and travelers who measured their journeys in miles from the city. The date of 1832 places it in the decades when New England's road network was expanding and improving, and the stone itself is a reminder that the region's commerce depended on well-marked routes long before railroads took over much of the freight.
