Bunting drapes the building behind a speaker facing a crowd that fills the street, and the gallery files the scene under Theodore Roosevelt's "Colonel - San Juan" years. Roosevelt earned that title as a leader of the Rough Riders, the volunteer cavalry regiment whose charge up San Juan Hill in Cuba in July 1898 made him a national figure during the Spanish-American War. Public appearances like this one helped turn that battlefield fame into political standing, and he parlayed it into the governorship of New York and then election as vice president in 1900.
