Edward Curtis staged this scene for his ethnographic project, which set out to record Indigenous life in North America before what he believed would be its disappearance. The title, "Coming for the bride," points to a Kwakwaka'wakw wedding custom in which the groom's party travels by canoe to collect the bride, and the rowers here are shown in full stroke on the water. Curtis's photographs of this kind were posed and arranged, so they capture a ceremony as he chose to present it rather than a spontaneous event. The image appeared as plate 337 in the supplementary volume of The North American Indian, published in the early twentieth century.
