This picture narrows its focus to two days, July 2 and 3, 1863, rather than the full three-day battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Those dates contain some of the fighting's most consequential moments: Confederate assaults on the Union flanks, including the struggle for Little Round Top and the fighting in the Peach Orchard and Wheatfield, followed on the third day by the attack on the Union center that became known as Pickett's Charge. Broad, map-style views of this kind were popular in the decades after the war, when many Americans wanted a clear picture of how the campaign unfolded across the fields and ridges.
