A color lithograph advertising Encre L. Marquet, an ink sold in Paris, this poster was issued in 1892 through the Nouvelles Affiches Artistiques Malherbe series. Its tall format, about 125 by 84 centimeters, was built for street walls, where bold color posters competed with newspapers and theater bills for passersby's attention. Paris in the early 1890s was a center of commercial poster art, and this sheet links the act of writing to the city's lively visual culture. The date and publisher come from an old caption card and have not been fully verified.
