The Williamson County Courthouse in Franklin, Tennessee, anchors a town about 20 miles south of Nashville. Franklin is best known for the Battle of Franklin, fought on November 30, 1864, when Confederate forces attacked Union lines at the edge of town, and the courthouse was part of the civic center that residents returned to in the years after. The caption card gives no date, so the picture is best read as a record of the building and its setting rather than a specific moment. Courthouses like this one were the everyday center of county life, housing records, trials and elections.
