Accomac, on Virginia's Eastern Shore, has been the seat of Accomack County since colonial times, and this photograph shows its courthouse as it appeared sometime in the 1920s. The catalog record places the county name in brackets, which suggests the cataloguers supplied it, and the date range is an estimate. Courthouses of this kind were often the most imposing buildings in small county towns, serving as the center of local records, trials and public business. Views like this one help show how such buildings looked before later renovations and additions.
