Fulton Street in lower Manhattan was home to one of the city's most important seafood markets, where fish and shellfish landed at the nearby East River piers were sold wholesale. The exterior view shows the market's street-side face, where the trade spilled out onto the sidewalks in the early hours before dawn. The market grew up in the 19th century and became one of the largest wholesale fish markets in the country, supplying restaurants and retailers across New York. Its crowded, working character is worth noticing, since the market moved to Hunts Point in the Bronx in 2005.
