The exterior view puts the Fulton Fish Market itself at the center, rather than the crowds or the boats inside. The market grew out of the older Fulton Market trade in the early 1800s and became one of New York's major seafood wholesalers, with fish arriving by boat and truck before dawn. Pictures of its outside show how closely the trade was tied to the streets and piers along the East River. The market moved to Hunts Point in the Bronx in 2005, so images like this now record a working waterfront district that no longer exists in its old form.
