Little is recorded about this particular negative beyond its title, "Constantinople," which the Bain News Service noted on the glass plate or its caption card without independent verification. It belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the body of roughly 40,000 negatives that the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, produced and distributed in the early twentieth century. Those images were often sold to newspapers and magazines, so many record the cities, events and people that drew public interest at the time. Constantinople, the Ottoman capital now called Istanbul, was then a place of intense international attention, and the title points to that broader context rather than to a documented scene.
