The name Herman Gassler comes from a title that the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or its caption card, and the record notes that the attribution has not been verified. The picture is a glass negative, a format that was standard for press and studio photography from the 1850s into the early 1900s and that produced fine detail in prints. It belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of a New York news photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers around the turn of the twentieth century. Its records are often thin, so the title and date are worth checking against other sources before you rely on them.
