The subject here is Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom and the arts, a fitting figure for a national library. This photomechanical reproduction shows Elihu Vedder's design for a mosaic intended for the Library of Congress in Washington, the building that was then rising as the institution's new home. Vedder, an American painter best known for his illustrations of the *Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam*, was commissioned to contribute to the building's decorative program. The print was issued by the Boston firm Curtis & Cameron, which made Copley prints, a process that allowed fine-art designs to reach a wide public in the late 1890s.
