Sheldon, a small town in northwest Iowa, is the setting here, and its library was one of the many public libraries built with money from Andrew Carnegie's grants in the early 1900s. Carnegie's program paid for construction while towns supplied the land and committed to funding staff and upkeep, so these buildings often became civic showpieces. The print was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, a step photographers took to protect images they sold, which helps explain why views like this one circulated widely in the years around 1909.
