Engraved in November 1782, this portrait shows William Petty, then Earl of Shelburne and later Marquis of Lansdowne. That same month, British and American negotiators signed preliminary articles of peace in Paris. Shelburne had become prime minister that summer, and his government conducted the talks that ended the American Revolutionary War and recognized American independence. The negotiations were controversial in Britain, and the print belongs to the public debate over a minister who was closely tied to the outcome of the war.
